Moving to Canal Winchester, Ohio with All My Sons Moving & Storage

If you are done with the city life and are more attracted to acres of farm land, then the fertile area of Canal Winchester is the right move for you!  First discovered by Henry Dove, who bought his family to the area in the 19th century. He was granted 160-acres of land that would later become Canal Winchester. Henry Dove began building the pathway for this thriving village and after his death, he passed the land down to his sons Rueben and Jacob Dove. Jacob later sold his land to John Coleman in 1824.

When plans brought the canal through Rueben Dove’s wheat field, he planned to sue the state. Instead, the canal workmen convinced him that he would be better off laying out a town since the area was midway between the two county seats of Columbus and Lancaster. It was not until November 5, 1828 that both Dove and Coleman recorded the first plat for Winchester, which was named after Dove’s father’s hometown of Winchester, Virginia.

Winchester flourished due to the twin industries of agriculture and transportation. The rich soil allowed the farmers to grow excess grains that could be sold. This created an agriculturally based economy in the area. In 1830, the first canal boat floated through Winchester. It was the Ohio and Erie Canal that brought passengers, freight, and means to transport grain to the market.

The post office was established in 1841, and due to the many other local cities being named Winchester, the village was changed to Canal Winchester. On May 31, 1851, the Ohio Secretary of State granted incorporation papers for the Village of Canal Winchester. Unlike other canal towns, Canal Winchester has continued to prosper through land and agriculture. If you are looking to move to Canal Winchester, you will find that its rich heritage is centered by its quaint downtown, which showcases many Victorian- era homes and historic landmarks.
