Tips for an Easier Move

Choose The Right Move For You

There are two types of moving: The type where you do it yourself, and the type where you hire someone to do everything for you. When you’re hiring someone to do everything for you, it doesn’t get much easier. But, when you hire people to do everything, it can get quite expensive, which is why many people choose to move without the help of the movers. If you are one of those people, there are some things you can do to make things a little bit easier on yourself.

Declutter and Downsize

Number one, all of that stuff that you’ve had for years, and you can’t stand to part with, but you haven’t used, or even seen in years, throw it out. If you haven’t used it within the past few years what makes you think that you’re going to use it when you get to your new home? Chances are, you probably won’t. So instead of schlepping it to wherever you’re moving, just get rid of it. It makes everything easier in the long run. For that stuff that you know someone else can get use out of, donate it. It’s better to let someone else use it than to let it sit in a dump for the rest of time. Try to eliminate as much waste as possible by donating and selling things that are no longer of use to you.

Label, Label, Label

Number two, number all of your boxes, on every side. Then, in a notebook that you keep handy, write down the number and the contents of the box. That way, when you get to your destination, you will have a slight idea as to where all of your belongings are. No more digging through every box looking for the silverware, score! Along with this, color coding the tape that you use on boxes can help you easily identify which box belongs in which room.

Keep The Essentials Aside

There are lots of little things you can do that you probably haven’t thought about. Packing an overnight bag is something that can be easily forgotten. At the same time, it is something that will save your life when you get to your new place and don’t know where in the mountain of boxes your clothes are. Packing all of the essentials that you will need pretty much right away in a clear bin will allow you to know exactly where they are. Things like toilet paper, a box cutter, and phone chargers are not things that you will want to be digging around for when you need them.

A Second Use For Clothing

To save space, pack your breakables in clothes. It’s an extremely efficient way to save space and money. Bye, bye bubble wrap, hello old t-shirts! On that note, packing glasses in clean socks is a great way to keep your glasses safe, and keep track of your socks. For powder make up that you don’t want to break during the move, put a cotton ball or pad in the container to help prevent them from shattering. Also, using plastic wrap to cover the openings of your liquid toiletries, and then putting the lid back on prevents them from spilling during the move. When taking down appliances that need hardware, keep sandwich bags handy to put the hardware in and label it. This is something that you will greatly appreciate when you get into your new home. There is a plethora of things that you can do to make your move to Birmingham easier. One thing to remember is to ask your friends. They have knowledge and insight about moving that you might not have ever thought of. Moves can be tough, so just try to keep your sanity when things get stressful. Everything else will fall into place.
