an island! Port Royal Island’s city of Beaufort, South Carolina is home to many
happy residents for numerous reasons. Great food, fun at land and at sea, and a
variety of colorful neighboring cities like Burton, Lady’s Island, Laurel Bay, and
Hilton Head Island are waiting for you to move to Beaufort!
Beaufort is part of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, a salt-marsh ecosystem that provides
ample opportunities for outdoor sporting activities while supporting a vast array
of wildlife. A bird-watcher’s paradise, hundreds of species of birds call the A.C.E.
Basin (named for the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers that form the basin) home.
Hop into a kayak for a more hands on experience, or board a tour boat to relax,
observe, and enjoy Beaufort’s landscape.
A true southern town, Beaufort is never shy about offering hospitality. Local residents
enjoy teaching those who have moved to Port Royal Island their intrinsic fishing,
sailing, shrimping, and crabbing skills. Hang a line off the Port Royal boardwalk
or Hunting Island State Park piers and hold on tight! The fish are just waiting
to be caught.
All of that tasty seafood is readily available in Beaufort’s many delicious restaurants.
Local and relocated chefs take pride in coming up with exotic dishes that often
become South Carolina favorites, and maybe even national legacies! Try a steeping
bowl of Frogmore Stew, a scrumptious collection of shrimp, sausage, corn, potatoes,
and onions. For a more delicate palate, try a creamy serving of She-crab soup, loaded
with blue crab meat and crab roe with a splash of sherry. Mouthwatering!
Beaufort and Port Royal house three military bases and the 17,000 active duty military
members that call Port Royal Island home, if only for a few years in service. The
Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) is in Beaufort, while Parris Island oversees the
20,000 Marine recruits that come through the U.S. Marine Corps Recruit Depot every
year. That’s a lot of Marines in one place, but local residents of Beaufort enjoy
the diversity their presence brings, as well as the sense of security they provide.
