Exploring the Sights: Baton Rouge’s Old State Capitol

Up until the current capitol was built in 1929, the Old Louisiana State Capitol building was home to the State of Louisiana’s legislature, dating back to the mid-19th century. Its architecture led residents to nickname it the Louisiana Castle, among other regal names. Since its restoration around 1990, the building was converted into the Museum of Political History.

The building has seen a number of uses, from originally an obvious political building, to a serving as a prison during the Civil War—basically, Union soldiers captured the city of New Orleans and housed Confederate captives there.

For those of you who live in the area, the Old Capitol is certainly a sight not to be missed. For those traveling to Baton Rouge, or moving there in the future, you’ll enjoy this historic piece of Louisiana. Admission is free, and the museum is open seven days a week. Take the word of us, your Baton Rouge movers, and take a tour of this beautiful landmark that overlooks the Mississippi River.
