Baton Rouge Historical District: Beauregard

Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, Beauregard Town is second oldest neighborhood in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is a mixed use neighborhood, consisting both of residential and business buildings. Elias Beauregard built a home here in 1806 with the intent of building a second subdivision of Baton Rouge.

Plazas and diagonal streets to the center were trademark characteristics of Beauregard Town. As time has passed, the plazas have deteriorated. The Old State Capitol was located within Beauregard Square boundaries, and government buildings still lie within the corner of the area.

The Union Army occupied Beauregard Town (as well as the rest of Baton Rouge) during the Civil War, subsequently burning and destroying historical buildings and landmarks. The buildings in existence now date to post-Civil War times, around 1900-1930. Many residents of Baton Rouge, including the Baton Rouge movers, wish to restore the neighborhood and bring Beauregard Town back to the glory it once held.
