Travis Heights in Austin

Travis Heights, according to Wikipedia, is an historic neighborhood in south Austin in Texas. It was first designed as an exclusive district for the wealthy. Today it has a mix of mansions, smaller homes and cool apartments south of the Colorado River. It’s a very desirable neighborhood, especially to young professionals because of its closeness to South Congress that’s filled with hip coffee shops and stores as well as Downtown Austin.

The first attempt to develop Travis Heights was in the 1880s when the idea was to build a ‘country mansion’ away from downtown. In those days the only way to cross the Colorado River was by ferry. So only a few mansions were built and when there was a bridge built, smaller homes started sprouting in the area. In the 1920s, some of the old mansions with carriage houses and detached garages were turned into apartments.

Travis Heights has three schools including Travis Heights Elementary School, Fulmore Middle School and Travis High School so growing families can also live there. There are two parks in the area Big Stacy and Little Stacy where people can jog, cycle and play tennis. There’s also Norwood Estate Park which is dog-friendly and a leash-free park.
