Moving Terminology

To better help you communicate with your movers of choice, All My Sons of Austin is here to help you with getting to know and understand the moving lingo. We know you only get to move a few times in your life, unlike our professional Austin movers who do it every day. Some of the words in our moving industry are pretty self-explanatory and some need a little more of an explanation. Here are some of the words we movers like to use a lot.

Accessorial Services which is just another way to say additional services to the transportation and delivery ones. For example, if you asked the local Austin movers to pack for you, that service would be an Accessorial Service.

Bill of Lading which is the receipt for your goods and the contract for their delivery. Make sure you understand the Bill of Lading before you sign it and don’t lose it because it’s an important document.

Binding or non-binding estimate are two different things. The Binding estimate means you agree in advance with the mover’s cost of the move based on the quantities and services shown on that estimate. Non-binding is the mover’s approximation of the cost of the move based on the weight and accessorial services requested.

The Carrier is also known as the mover like All My Sons of Austin for example is the Carrier.

Change of Order just means that the amount indicated as well as the services requested originally are amended.

Flight Charge is an extra fee the movers will be asking for carrying items up or down a flight of stairs.

Guaranteed Pickup and Delivery Service means that the dates of the moving services are guaranteed, with the mover providing reimbursement if those dates aren’t respected.

High Value article refers to an item that’s valued at $100 per pound. These precious items are disclosed before the move, so that extra precautions are taken in order to get them to the new location safely.

Order of Service lets your movers of choice actually transport your personal belongings.

Valuation or Extra Care Protection refers to the degree of worthiness of the shipment. It compensates your mover for assuming more liability than what’s in the standard transportation charges.

We hope that this moving vocabulary and definitions will help to be better prepared when moving day comes around. If you live in the Austin, TX area, be sure to get your free moving quote on All My Sons of Austin website.
