Little Home Improvements, Big Savings

If you just moved into a new house and are looking to make some home improvements (nothing too big) that’ll give you back some savings, All My Sons of Austin has picked up a few tricks and tips with help from MSN.com. And if you’re in your home for several years already, this money-saving advice should help you even more to balance the household budget, especially in these tough economic times.

If you have a programmable thermostat, you can save a lot of money when you’re cooling or heating place. You can program it to be lower in temperature when you’re sleeping and keep it warmer when you’re awake.

Using compact florescent bulbs can also make a difference in your utilities bill, especially when you calculate all the bulbs you have at home. And if you’re house is really big, your savings will be too. MSN states Consumer Report’s top-rated bulbs as being from Home Depot and called the EcoSmart spiral CFL.

You can also save some more by switching your showerhead, especially if you have two or three bathrooms around the house. If you install a low-flow showerhead, like the American Standard FloWise showerhead, you’ll save water in fact, about 40% in water savings. The Austin movers also learnt that if you also installed a low-flow toilet, you’ll have even greater savings.

Insulation is another home improvement that can put back more money in your bank account. Heat loss through walls, floors and the roof is responsible for about 45% of heat loss or cooling loss. So make sure your home is insulated properly. You can also benefit from a federal tax credit of about 30% (up to $1500) for installing insulation. Make sure the ducts around the house are also insulated.

If you have an old washing machine, it maybe time to change it because they spend a lot of water. A front-loading machine can deliver great savings in terms of water and electricity. Speaking of water, if you get an on-demand water heater that provides water only when you need it, that’ll remove the need to have a water tank using up energy all day. These tank-less are allegedly 8% to 50% more efficient than the regular ones, depending on the needs.

Energy-efficient windows can also make a difference. They fend off unwanted heat and keep a cool house cool. They also block harmful UV rays that can fade your carpet and/or furniture and apparently can also reduce the size of the heating or cooling system you need.

All My Sons of Austin and the local Austin movers hope these little tidbits can really make a difference in your wallet, not to mention a difference for the environment. If you’re seeking a new energy-efficient home, let All My Sons of Austin help you move when you find that perfect green-er place.
