According to this article, eighty percent of tenants really take care of the apartments they rent and are no problem at all, but about fifteen percent have their qualms about what they’re supposed to do with two to three percent actually being a nightmare. It’s not a dog, it’s a barking cat is one answer landlords get when they complain about having pets in their property. If dogs aren’t allowed in the apartment complex you decide to rent in, then don’t have dogs and follow the rule. The rules apply to everyone, so landlords can’t make excuses.
If a landlord allows you to paint the place you’re renting from them, they mean ‘just the walls’. MSN’s article gives an example of a person who painted an entire NY apartment purple, the ceiling, the walls, everything in a lavender shade.
Property managers state that a common excuse is ‘my grandmother died’. Renters say they need to pay for the funeral and that’s why they couldn’t pay the rent. Sometimes, apparently, the grandmother dies six times in the same year.
The check bouncing is an all-time favorite. Apparently, people think that they’ve paid the rent when their checks have bounced.
Renters use the excuse of being a victim of identity theft as reason for their bad credit. They don’t realize that their credit was just as bad before the date they say they were victimized.
‘I can’t pay the rent’ at least is honest as far as excuses go. This statement was followed by, ‘ My accountant said I can’t afford to pay my rent’, ‘I mailed it at the post office last night but someone lit that mailbox on fire this morning’, ‘with my daughter’s graduation, our new boat and our trip to Europe this year, we’re a little strapped’, ‘we all have the flu, we’re not sure if it’s the swine flu and we like you so much we didn’t want to give it to you, so we didn’t pay the rent’ and ‘my dog ate it’.
