These days, we all get so caught up in the news--things happening here or there, depressing news about the economy or job market, and awful trends like identity theft and credit fraud. But are you forgetting something that's a little closer to home? Feeling safe and being protected in your home should be a priority. If it hasn't been in the past, now is the time to change that.
Whether you rent or own, there are tips & tricks to help keep you and your loved ones safe. First, if you rent, there are a few requests you should present to your landlord asap if they are not in place already, such as:
*A peephole in the front door. And use common sense--if someone's outside in a pizza outfit and you didn't order a pizza--don't answer!
*At least 3 locks on the front door, and preferably on any other doors leading into your home. One lock is quick to pick--3 may take a while.
*Discuss alarm systems and surveillance. Even if you live in a considerably "safe area," things can happen anywhere.
*Run and walk only when the sun is out. Also, if you hear someone behind you, stay in a lit area and try to head in a direction of a store or an area with people matriculating.
*List your phone number under a first initial, not your full name. This especially pertains to people living alone--seeing one name listed increases the chances of someone not being home at times.
*When you go out of town, hold your mail and newspaper delivery. Overflowing mailboxes and piles of papers are a green light to thieves that no one is home.
Remember, the Atlanta movers want you to stay safe, inside of your home and out. By paying attention to your surrounding and focusing in the moment (and not on, say, a cell phone), you'll already be giving yourself an upper hand on avoiding a potential incident. Stay safe, Georgia!
