How To Move A Plant

If you’re moving to a new place in the upcoming weeks and your move includes house plants there are a few things you should know about taking good care of them prior to the big day. All My Sons Moving and Storage of West Palm Beach is here to help you with a few tips on how to prepare your plants for the move in the weeks leading up to it.

Three weeks before your move, All My Sons West Palm Beach movers suggest repotting the plants that are currently in clay pots into unbreakable plastic containers of the same size. Don’t change the size of the container because that can be dangerous for certain plants.

Two weeks before moving, the movers at All My Sons Moving and Storage of West Palm Beach suggest pruning larger plants so they can pack better and have more bushy plants that are more attractive. Pinch back whatever is newly grown with your thumb and forefinger. Remember, succulents and ferns don’t do well with pruning.

One week before moving day, check the plants for insects and parasites.

Two days before the big day, water your plants as you normally do. Don’t over-water them because they can grow fungus during the move.

On moving day itself, All My Sons West Palm Beach movers suggest wrapping large house plants with an old sheet or tissue paper to prevent the branches from breaking. Place the plants in boxes, making sure each plant has a different box and fits snugly. You can use paper around the bottom of the boxes to help you stabilize the plants and make them fit into their boxes. Punch air holes on the side of the boxes and loosely fasten the lid so the plants can breathe. Also, make sure the boxes are upright and marked with ’plant’. You can choose to load it in the moving truck or take it with you in your car so you can have more control over it. Whatever you do, make sure you load the house plants last. If you choose to put it in your car, try to avoid the truck because of the heat and lack of fresh air. If there’s a long way to go before arriving to your new home, you can make a few stops in shaded areas and crack a window open.

Once in your new place, the All My Sons West Palm Beach movers recommend unpacking your plants first. Remove them from the bottom of the boxes to avoid breaking their branches or leaves. Place them where you can enjoy them most and watch them blossom.

West Palm Beach, FL Moving Company Checklist

Moving can be a stressful time, with packing, changing your address with the post office, finding new schools for your kids and so on. So All My Sons Moving and Storage of West Palm Beach has put together a list of questions to ask yourself as well as the moving company you’re about to hire to help you find out if, in fact, they are a good and reputable moving company.

  • Have you heard of the moving company before? In other words, do they have a reputation?
  • Is this moving company a professional one or are they just freight forwarders who can also move people?
  • Are they offering you a moving contract or rely on verbal communication?
  • How long has this moving company been in business?
  • Is the moving company offering you to come prepared with packing materials like bubble wrap, tape, and so on?
  • Does the moving company have an actual brick-and-mortar office?
  • How long have they been in business?
  • Do they sound professional over the phone? Do they ask you the right questions and answer yours in an informative manner?
  • Is this moving company really just a freelancer with a truck or is it an established enterprise?
  • Does this moving company have a website?
  • Have you read reviews about their services or testimonials?
  • Are they a moving company or a moving broker?
  • Has their quote been around the same as other moving companies?
  • Are they licensed and insured?
  • Are they providing you with a Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move pamphlet?

When moving, make sure to always ask questions when dealing with moving companies. The more questions, the more answers you’ll have and the more informed you’ll be. Ask about their estimates, ask about references, their insurance, ask about their experience, ask about anything you’d like. Especially if you have an unusual item you want to move or something heavy like a piano. If you’re trying to move your business and nut your home, ask if that moving company does that service. You’re paying for the moving services after all and you have a right to know all about the details.

On moving day, make sure to have valuables with you. Your jewelry, cash, important papers, medicine, should all be with you. Only your packed boxes, furniture and appliances make it onto that truck.

Try to plan you move around quieter months, you might score a better price and more flexibility around your schedule. From June to September, most moving companies are very busy. Try to work around that, but if you must move during that time, consider the middle of the month and/or the middle of the week.

Make yourself a little kit you can take with you instead of on the moving truck. This kit can include things you’ll need to use during moving day and the personal items you’ll need in the next few days after the move. Everything will still be in boxes in different rooms around the house, you want to make sure you have your medication, work clothes, toothbrush and toiletries on hands. This is especially a great idea if you have kids or pets because they have their own needs to.

Overall, try to be patient throughout the day and find comfort in knowing that it will come to an end. Also if you have kids, it helps to make prior arranges before moving day. If you’re dealing with a professional company like All My Sons of West Palm Beach, things will run smoothly and you’ll be enjoying your home in no time.
